Sometimes I wonder why I decided to work in healthcare. I could have been a lab rat, a computer geek, or worked in a discount furniture wharehouse driving a fork truck. Anything that doesn’t have to do with people. Why? Because some people are just totally crazy. The wheel is spinning but the hamster’s dead. Gates are down, lights are flashing, but the train ain’t coming. I have a bipolar schizophrenic patient that speaks in fragmented and confusing sentences. A co-worker of mine has a knee patient that enjoys telling his old war stories and recounts the people he killed. I know soldiers have to do this in war situations and thank God I will never know what that’s like. However, one shouldn’t have enjoyment in their eyes when they talk about it. Please go to a shrink and talk about it.
There was a couple on Oprah recently who decided to sell their condo, buy a bus, and travel across America for their retirement. The bus was no ordinary bus, but a luxurious recreational vehicle that Oprah herself wished she had. Travelling across the country in their motorhome the couple’s mantra was, “spend less and live more.” By making all the right decisions and saving for retirement they are able to live what many can only dream about.
Recently, I had a patient in physical therapy who had been mildly injured an an auto accident. The car accident had been well over 6 months old and the patient was functioning rather independently. She would tell me about how her and her husband were unable to work so they had no money. The power steering rack had gone out on her car, they had trouble paying for gas, car insurance, etc. Her family also has no medical insurance and is waiting on a settlement from litigation on this auto accident. On the last day of her therapy she reported how much better she was doing and said she had no pain at all. Then she tells me that she is seeking social security disability income because she can’t work without pain like other people. While I have no doubt that she has some discomfort and pain from her auto accident, there is no physical reason why she cannot find a job with light duties. I got news for you…we all go to work with a little bit of pain. Social security disability income is not for people who are walking around with no difficulties, smiling, laughing, going grocery shopping, and basically functioning independently. I wish she could see some of the people that I’ve seen who really deserve disability. For instance, my patient with MS who couldn’t hold her head up so her husband would hold it up for her. My 40 year old who was hit by a car when he was 2 whose extremities are contracted so he can’t straighten his arms or legs. There are too many out there just abusing the system.
We’ve all heard so much about our troubled U.S. economy lately that I can’t help but wonder when we can turn things around? Due to high gas prices I will have to buy new luggage because I was using 2 small bags intead of 1 big bag so I don’t get charged the extra fee by the airlines. I cringe every time I put gas in my car because its costing me a small fortune just to drive to work. I used to not pay that much attention to how much I was spending at the grocery store. Not anymore. I look at the prices on everything and I have cut out on things I would have normally bought a year ago. I’m spending the same amount on groceries and not getting half of what I used too.
When the show Dancing With The Stars first came out I never watched it. Then when I started my career and began working one of my co-workers absolutely loved but wasn’t home at night to watch it. So, she would tape the episodes and bring them in to work to watch at lunch. From that point on I have been hooked. Occasionally the airbrush tanning and the costumes get a little over the top but I guess that’s what makes it so entertaining. Last night I was sad to see Misty May-Treanor go out of the competition with a torn achilles tendon. That is a pretty major and painful injury but she will bounce back. I think Warren Sapp is my favorite dancer and I love to see him go all the way.
We always hear about how we need to eat healthy, maintain a good body weight, and get a little exercise everyday. The most important reason to do all these things will become more prevalent as we get older. Why? Quality of life that’s why. You may have unhealthy habits that don’t affect your life right now so you see no reason to make any changes. By the time you’ve realized that you need to make a change it will probably be too little too late. I work in orthopedic/cardiac rehab unit where I’ve heard many say, “If I’d only adopted healthy habits sooner…” Getting a little exercise is as simple as taking a brisk walk in your neighborhood. You can supplement a healthy diet with supplements like orovo products, or eat a daily serving of fruits and vegetables. Cut back on sweets and reduce your caloric intake to help maintain a good body weight.
